The author of this article has turned what is usually a simple cookbook experiment with growing bean seeds into an excellent inquiry experiment. By giving the students only some simple beginning instructions and then letting them choose other aspects of the experiment they are doing true inquiry. The final lab report is excellent in its makeup and material covered.

This little activity uses the nine-bean soup mix beans to have students in middle school understand the growth of plants. All aspects of the activity are provided including a rubric. Students can select four different beans or four similar ones. While this activity is developed for middle school students it can easily be used for elementary students as well.
