Meet the Mealworms

by: Teena Staller

Fourth-grade students’ inquiry skills are tested when a container of mealworms arrives and they are given the opporunity to explore an unfamiliar organism. Students complete a series of mealworm activities, from observing and drawing the mealworms, to evaluating their movements and senses. Next, the teacher observes how they respond when she brings in snails. The 10-day study allowed students to examine and compare living creatures, while also spurring them to further scientific investigation and discovery.
