More and more, science teachers are going to be asked to understand and teach what is in the CCSS. It seems that many of us are trying desperately to get up to speed with the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) so that we will be better able to make connections to the NGS (Next Generation Science) Standards when they are finalized. This article provides a chart that aligns the mathematical practices from the CCSSI standards with the scientific and engineering practices that will be part of the NGS document. Next it provides a chart that lists examples of the science standards for global climate change from the “Framework for K-12 Science” with the mathematics CCSSI standards for grades 2, 5, 8 and 12. It really helps to see how these newer standards connections are being made for some of our current science content. There are so many GOOD things about the changes we are all about to make in how we teach science. This article makes it easier to visualize them and takes away some of the apprehension. Change is inevitable; it doesn’t need to be dreaded.
