Having once used a composting bin commercially produced and designed for indoor use I would now consider it more fully before doing this in a classroom again. Although it was a good learning tool for my 6th grade class it became a minor issue when it developed what was thought to be fruit flies in the classroom. This article would have been a great read before ordering a bin and using it within the classroom. What to compost, where to compost and sanitary issues are elaborated upon in this article.

This short article should be a "Must Read" for any and all teachers planning on composting as part of their curriculum. This article provides a clear short (but concise) safety list of do s and don't s when composting. It also gives a short summary of what composting does. The resource list also had some valuable site locations that teachers could use to enhance their understanding of the concept. Although presented in the middle school journal, I feel it would also be appropriate at both the elementary and high school level.
