The article is modified from a lesson that was in Science Scope for 3rd grade students. After learning about a problem, they designed a model to solve the problem, in this case, a shelter for African penguins for their nests to keep them from overheating or being eaten by predators. While parts of the lesson were direct instruction, other parts allowed for student creativity and design. A list of items that can be used for assessment is provided. Easy to set up and great learning experience.

Third grade students explore temperature and heat concepts as they practice engineering design skills. Students create miniature dwellings to protect South African penguins from gulls and climate change. In order to replicate this activity, the article mentions that one must go on line and look for small, penguin-shaped ice trays. Thermometers and desk lamps that can mimic the hot Sun are needed, as well. Students create shelters out of a variety of readily available materials. The complete materials list is can be downloaded via an NSTA Connection link located at the end of the article. An evaluation rubric for the culminating activity is included. The article emphasizes that weaving science content with world issues or problems becomes easy when including an engineering design challenge.
