I was impressed by the effort the author took in connecting soil to decomposition to solid waste disposal issues. In a set of 3 integrated activities, the author provides excellent information about the formation of soil, incorporates some of the math behind decomposition, and sets the stage for kids to think about where all the trash goes. It is a challenging set of activities, one that I would probably spread out over most of a semester, especially if students are doing experiments about worm environmental preferences.

The subject of soil is not commonly taught to this depth but the activities provided by the resources in this article full of activities is helpful deciding if a teacher wants to do all that is discussed in this article. I believe that this unit might take a longer time than given to the understanding of soils but I think the connection to a food web is significant. An interesting article.
