The article explains four different GLAD (Guided Language Acquistion Design) teaching strategies. The strategies are pictorial input, picture file cards, poster boards, and ear-to-ear reading. I enjoyed the layout of this article and how the author provided real examples of the strategies being used. The pictures that go along with the article were also beneficial for the readers understanding. The article can help teach science to ELL's better due to the strategies outlined in the article. The picture file cards are a great strategy to bring into any lesson because students can talk in their native languages while discussing the photos. This is mainly done in small groups do the anxiety of speaking in front the whole class is eliminated. The article does not talk about how to assess NGSS but it does hit many key aspects of the three dimensions. Crosscutting is established in many of the strategies. Drawing pictures, making poster boards, and reading aloud all cut into different subjects like the arts and language arts. Lastly, in my opinion that article does not have any shortfalls.

This article is about Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD). This technique is described in this article and it basically combines visual learning with language acquisition through picture file cards, poster boards, and more. There is a technique this author is unfamiliar with called ‘Ear to Ear’ reading. What is important is that these techniques would be useful for all children in an elementary science classroom.

The author presents strategies from Guided Language Acquisition Design lessons for ELLs. While the article describes using them with pre-service teachers, the strategies are actually rather traditional but with a twist towards language learning as well as science. The author also provides references for additional information on using this type of teaching strategy and points out that what helps ELLs will also help special needs students or at-risk students develop science vocabulary and science talk as well. While this is geared towards elementary, I can see this working in a middle level inclusive classroom as well.

This article describes a program called GLAD, Guided Language Acquisition Design. This approach is designed to address core curriculum. This technique employs a pictorial input followed by picture file cards. These cards using in a cooperative learning group in the student’s home language is very helpful to them. Using posters with photos also helps them acquire the language. She also describes a technique called ‘Ear to Ear’ reading. While the concept of pictures is not new, these strategies can serve as a starting point for new teachers.
