This article contains lesson plans for life cycles of living things using the 5 E inquiry lesson model, and a specific trade book is identified for each lesson. Included are helpful graphic organizers and the intentional aligning of the Common Core ELA standards in vocabulary acquisition and use (in grades K-3) and for integration of knowledge and ideas (in grades 4 – 6). The only downside of using these lesson plans revolves around the need to arrange for the timely delivery of live specimens for each of the two lessons. For grades K -3, the author used the larvae of butterflies, and for the grades 4 – 6, the author used frog eggs. The website resources provided at the end of the article are a bonus. Plus there is a URL that takes one to the NSTA website where the student activity sheets needed for the observation activities can be found and downloaded.
