After describing what cooperative learning was not, the author of this article describes the key suggestions for positive cooperative learning activities. Suggestions include: cooperative learning is a skill that gets better with practice; groups should be selected after you are familiar with your students; start small; and many more that can be learned by reading this article. Since the author is a preservice educator she suggests that soon to be teachers should engage in a team building activity before experiencing cooperative learning. This same idea would be good for a department refresher lesson on cooperative learning as well.
