Student performing experiments have to decide if their tests are ‘fair tests’. This article provides an example of how students learn what a fair test is for true scientific inquiry. The lesson described takes 4 periods. Students use peer evaluation rubrics and poster rubrics as well as question classification to understand the process of deciding what a fair testable question is. This activity might be one that would be good for the start of a school year to set the pace for student inquiry investigations.

The article presents a process to introduce students to inquiry. It does a very nice job of walking one through the steps and problems that might occur. I teach inquiry to my middle school students using this process (and my students actually developed a lab similar to this one) and they enjoyed it very much.
