- This journal article caught my eye when I was looking for materials on organisms and environment. The ideas that were talked about like bringing students into a place they have seen many times, but looking for specific things. - Something I learned from this article is that when students explore their environment, it helps them develop science-process skills which is very important for the inquiry in science education. - TEK: K(8) Earth and space. The student knows that there are recognizable patterns in the natural world and among objects in the sky. The student is expected to:(A) observe and describe weather changes from day to day and over seasons;. I would use this TEK in my kindergarten classroom In the month of February so students can see the change from winter to spring when we are learning about seasons. - This article was very straight forward and I agreed with everything it said. I wondered if students could also collect evidence of the season change?

This is a great article to read if you are looking for ways to help students make year-round connections to their natural surroundings as they practice their journal-writing skills. A lesson plan called “A Rainbow Hunt” is provided for K-3rd graders, and 4-6th graders are invited to “Find Your Own Special Place” as they examine a habitat and how it changes over time. The article also shares a couple of trade books that can be used to provide a literacy connection. One is called, “I Took a Walk” by Henry Cole. It is about a boy walking through the woods and making observations about the animals he sees. “Secret Place” by Eve Bunting is the second book mentioned. This beautifully illustrated children’s book depicts a city boy finding his corner of nature amongst the smokestacks, freeways, and skyscrapers
