This is an excellent example of citizen science. The author gives a brief overview of a real-world study that he did with his class. While it does not give specifics as to how to replicate the project in your community, a savvy educator can "google" necessary key words and have their students write a protocol that would work for their situation. The description of the procedure is well written so students can glean from it what they would need. It is a project that could be done with a group of students or an entire class.

It is encouraging to show students that they can do real research, and that as citizens, they can make a difference.
