I have been introducing my students to my class with this activity for years. It sets the tone of my teaching style. Students ask questions, challenging them to frame the question for a yes or no response, the beginnings of scientific inquiry. When I meet parents at back to school night, so many express how excited their child is to learn about science this year. Science should always be exciting!

This is a very short and to the point article that offers suggestions for "first day" activities. The author discusses her reason for not following the traditional routine of going over rules and expectations. The article also contains the author's suggestion for a first day activity. I especially liked how the author included detailed information on the activity she completed, how to set it up, the scientific principles behind the event and the impact of the event throughout the school year. While the activity mentioned in the article may not be an activity I would complete with my students (we study different content), the article offers ideas and inspiration on how to complete a unique and engaging first day activity to help inspire an interest and love of science.
