In this article the authors share the success of integrating performing text into a science lesson. The teachers led a one-week lesson of the heart and the circulatory system and had the students perform a rap song as the last piece of the lesson plan. The first part of the lesson the teacher had the students answer a few questions related to the heart. This questionnaire was a guide to see what prior knowledge the students had on the heart and help the teacher decided what her next steps will be. After this the teacher gave students stethoscopes for them to listen to their heart. To explain the circulation system, the teacher used a turkey baste and water to demonstrate how circulation works. This was followed by an interactive video that explained the heart and the circulation system. The culminating piece of their lesson was learning a rap song that explained the circulation system. The song included movement to add more meaning to the words in the rap song. The students were engaged and excited to perform the song to their peers and teachers. After their performance, teachers and administrators asked them questions about the heart and they were able to answer the questions correctly. I will be using performing text in my next lesson plan in order to engage my students in their learning.
