Can an Informal Science Institution Really Play the Key Role in K–12 Science Education Reform?

by: Dennis Schatz

The Washington State LASER (Leadership Assistance for Science Education Reform) program is under the leadership of the Pacific Science Center, an informal, nonprofit science institution, dedicated to increasing the public’s understanding and appreciation of science, mathematics, and technology through interactive exhibits and programs. LASER’s mission is to assist school districts with implementing an ongoing, K–12 inquiry-based science program, aligned with the Washington State science standards. Its vision is to have science education as a critical part of children’s education today, just as science is a critical part of today’s world. This vision drives all LASER activities and builds from the fundamental tenants in the National Science Education Standards (NSES).
