This article is a must-read for both teachers and student teachers. In this article, author Michelle Trueworthy enlightens readers on a way to give science homework that is engaging for all students. Instead of having students fill out worksheets, she had the students participate in a hands-on homework assignment that made them interact with nature. Trueworthy incorporated the principles of Universal Design for Learning as she let students choose their own way to demonstrate their learning. Students had the opportunity to choose from a variety of options that would showcase their learning, which forced them to use their own creativity and decision-making skills. The homework assignments led to class discussions that enhanced students' understanding of the science concepts. This article describes how one teacher overhauled her science homework assignments from a groaner to a fun, productive event that the whole family could participate in. The author also learned that allowing students choices with assignments made the students more interested in their assignment. Students were asked to walk around their yard and to observe. While this might work for students in areas where they live in homes, it might also be applied to inner city kids who might do a walk around their block if it is safe to do.

I though this article had some great ideas as to how make out of school work more meaningful and relevant to the student's life. Before taking on in your school be sure you are clear on your school's/district's homework policy to make sure your assignments still fit within the scope and time allotments for student work.
