Earth Science in the News

by: Julia A. Jackson and Alma Hale Paty

Earth scientists gather and analyze evidence of change on Earth through time to increase our understanding of the geologic past and the history of life. Students can experience the excitement and challenges of the geosciences by investigating the materials that provide clues about our past—fossils, minerals, and rocks. Here, the authors offer two activities to help your students explore the geosciences. The first is a fossil collection simulation that has students digging through strata of newspaper. The second is an interdisciplinary research project that has them investigate the fossils, minerals, and rocks of their home state.
