The advantages and challenges of having students create a piece of realistic wildlife art are discussed in this article. On the plus side: students---and science teachers have an opportunity to extend themselves through project-based artwork while developing student research skills. The unit does take time away from the standard curriculum, however, and may not be something each school is willing to do. Teachers can make use of the well-fleshed rubric to grade similar projects. I would have been nice to see more emphasis on linking the content to curriculum.
