This article explains how eighth graders are able to draw inferences and deepen their understandings about the rock cycle by carefully observing different types of breads. The teacher chooses a: flat bread like pita bread; sweet bread like a berry muffin; and a hearty bread like pumpernickel. All of these breads (like rocks) may have started with identical ingredients. Proportions of the components and time of exposure to various temperatures create different types of textures, colors, shapes, etc., just like in the rock cycle. The article also shows how to connect different cultures through the discussions of types of breads being eaten at home. Students gain lots of practice making observations and inferences as a result of this multisensory and engaging lesson opener. I plan to try this the next time I introduce a unit on rocks and minerals.

This is a simple, clever idea that can be used to introduce a lot of different units. Any lesson that requires careful observation and comparisons could be introduced using this idea -- although it is particularly appropriate for rocks. The kids always love being able to eat in class, but allergies are a concern.
