This article describes how assessment can be embedded in each step of a 5E lesson about moon phases. Many of the assessments are formative and two are used as summative. Figure 1 presented in this article provides an example of assessment purpose through the 5E model. The authors used their model with preservice teachers and briefly identify each of their assessments through the 5E model. More examples of their puzzlers would have improved the article.

Using the 5E model of learning the authors demonstrate how to embed assessment into each step of the model. Using a unit about moon phases two diagrams in the article illustrate both the purpose of assessment in each stage of the 5E model and what assessment strategies can be applied in each stage. The supporting text for each stage helps the reader understand how this formative assessment is applied. This is an interesting article that should required reading for all teachers to help them understand how assessment can be easily embedded in the learning cycle.
