This article describes how to develop a unit to use lichens as air quality indicators. The author refers to use of the Pathfinder Science Network online which still exists. Regardless, the lessons seem able to stand alone and as described provide good data for a problem based science unit that would be easy to implement. It might be interesting to combine with lessons using other bioindicators or other air quality indicators. This could be done at almost any grade level - although small students might have problems getting high enough above the root buttress - something missing that students should determine is how high they will take their measurements. Good lesson!
