This article explains how to effectively incorporate literacy into the learning cycle. Using the 5E learning cycle, the authors explain how trade books can be used to enhance science education. This article describes how incorporating science trade books into inquiry learning experiences. ‘Trade books’ is a term used to describe books about science, either fiction or nonfiction, that are not textbooks. In this article, the authors provide examples of trade books appropriate for each phase and identify ways to incorporate their use. They list what criteria a book needs to have if it were to be used in the Engage phase of the 5E model of learning. They then provide an example of how it can be used in all 5 stages. This is done for each of the 5 parts of this learning model. This is a good article to start teachers thinking of making inquiry lessons more interesting for our students.
