This very detailed article gives carefully guided steps for writing in science. It helps the students develop their thinking and then write about it. This was a model tried with a test group of students which has proved to work in other school systems. Student writing showed an impressive improvement at all student ability levels.

This article describes the ‘Reading and Writing About Science (RWS) Project’ to demonstrate the need for carefully planned and scaffolded writing activities in science especially in the upper elementary grades. Figure 1 provides the guidelines for constructing effective writing prompts and Figure 2 provides an example that meets those guidelines. There is a CORE (Connect, Organize, Reflect, Extend) Model that incorporates four elements that represent how reading and can be linked. Teacher insights demonstrate the need for making the connection between reading and science for students.
