The article describes how a science coordinator/teacher worked with a visiting scientist to design instruction to help her students better understand what scientists do, what this particular scientist researched, and how to model science concepts. The collaboration was unusual in that the scientist was at school every day for 3 months (doing her own research on how students develop an interest in science). However I believe with careful planning to use time effectively, a similar program could be developed for a scientist who visited for a shorter time or maybe one day a week. Since the students developed a better understanding of what it means to do science and an interest in science careers, it would be a good program to imitate at any grade level

A great article about a resident scientist (biomedical researcher) inspiring gifted elementary students (especially girls) toward careers in science for three months. The article describes how the scientists worked with students in the school to look at the digestive tract. Other students were able to see her work in the scientist’s environment and were intrigued by the technology and tools available. As a firm believer in starting kids to thinking about science careers as early as possible, this article supports this belief.
