This article introduces a lesson plan which combines WebQuest and 5E learning cycle teaching strategies and teaches students the knowledge about predator-prey relationships with the example of alligators and pythons and how human affect the survival of animals. The author analyzes that the 5E learning cycle attaches more importance to the inquiry, while WebQuest attaches more importance to content. When the teacher integrates those two great teaching strategies in the one lesson, students can achieve better learning performance in the investigation of real-life phenomena. In this lesson, the teacher combined each teaching steps of WebQuest with the steps of the 5E learning circle, such as Introduction = Engage, Task + Resources = Explore, Process = Explain. In this combined WebQuest/5E lesson, the teacher not only practices students’ skill of inquiry a real-life phenomenon but also connect the technology to the class which enables students to find information on the Internet resources.
From this article, I learned a new mindset, which I can use different teaching models or strategies flexibly. As a future teacher, we do not need to keep using one existing teaching models, we can integrate the different research-based strategies according to our lesson requirements and class situations. Appropriate innovations and changes may lead to better teaching effectiveness. I will use this combined WebQuest/5E model in my future class, because this model let students research more information on the Internet, communicate with group members and try to give explanations and presentations. Nowadays, there is massive information on the Internet, except for learning in inquiry, students are supposed to have the ability to obtain useful information and present it.
