S.A.I.L. is an acronym for Science Assessment, Instruction, and Learning Cycle. The goal of any resource is to make it meaningful. Page Keeley, the author, reflects on the ways a formative assessment probe can be used to integrate learning, instruction and assessment. In this article the reader will find descriptions for six ways to use the probes and also a chart outlining SAIL. Formative assessments are a powerful method to target instruction and trigger inquiry-based activities. In this article, Keeley explains the use of formatives throughout the learning cycle. Keeley provides an in depth look at selecting the right formative for each stage of instruction and gives examples based off of formative assessments from previous articles. This article helped me to extend my application of formatives and see new possibilities for my classroom.
