In this article the authors provide a vocabulary activity for teaching expository text structures. They include information about generalization, cause and effect, classification, sequence, compare and contrast, and enumeration. The focus of this article is on providing ways to improve student awareness of text structure and context. A website with additional vocabulary activities is also provided in the references. A small part of the article is devoted to using graphic organizers to help illustrate sequencing and mapping skills through the context of the water cycle. Middle and high school teachers would find some useful information for helping their students with understanding science content from textbooks.
