This article presents a way to move middle school students from the egocentric ways of thinking to looking at the bigger issues of the human race. This is an interdisciplinary approach that provides lesson for science, math, social studies and language arts all designed to teach the same message: Environmental conservation helps the human race. It is a little confusing how this is implemented but all the material seems to be there. This would work well with a grade level team of teachers.

If you are a middle school teacher wanting to integrate using an environmental theme with your team of teachers and students, this article may be of interest to you. The author enlists the help of her colleagues to teach an integrated unit with this message: Environmental conservation betters the human race. It is a weeklong series of lessons that are taught in language arts, social studies, math and science classes. Differentiation occurs as students choose their webquests and in the administration of final assessments. The article seems to provide enough explanation so that teachers will feel confident to try it in their schools. For the webquests, a scoring rubric is provided as well as several webquest URLs.
