The authors point out that students need to be taught reading strategies to be successful readers of science/ factual texts. They provide an argument against just "reading aloud" and then present strategies to teach students how to reflect on their reading how to find meanings in the text - skills I was taught early in my reading career but some students haven't yet grasped in my 8th grade classes. I use all of these strategies when I read and teach some to my students but I hadn't thought about the others until I read this. It is good to be reminded of ways to help students to teach themselves how to understand and take ownership of their learning.

This article outlines four strategies to use in class to help students become better science textbook readers. These strategies include such ideas a demonstrating each specific strategy, walking through each skill, using stopping points and facilitating sharing. While each of these makes sense I still see students zoning out when science textbooks are used with basic reading skills.
