This is a whimsical article that explains chemical bonding in a fun way to students by playing the Dating Game. Although is program is no longer on TV it is still an exciting way for students to learn about the pattern of the Periodical Table and what how elements bond.

This game relies on an old TV game show called the ‘Dating Game’. An element such as Ms. Oxygen has to find a suitable mate among three eligible male suitors such as Mr. Calcium, Mr. Sodium and Mr. Carbon. Students have previously learned to draw the Bohr model of an atom. During this activity the students assist the teacher in drawing each of the atoms to see who is best suited for each other. This is a fun way to get students to understand and visualize how atoms combine.

I used this resource with my 8th graders last year, and they LOVED it. They were incredibly engaged, and were able to explain bonding among atoms much more effectively after we did this activity. I offered extra credit to students who wanted to write their own version of the play.

Remembering the original "Dating Game" show may be out of reach for some teachers.Anther difficulty might be in finding overhead projectors! But for those of us old enough to remember, this is a very cute activity for teaching ionic bonding. I like the inquiry component of allowing students to discover why the periodic table is arranged the way it is. I will be trying this out with my classes this year (I am sure the white board will work okay), mentioning that we are modeling atoms as if they were people, to see how they like it.
