If you are looking for a lesson that will help you teach science literacy to your students, look no further. I modified this lesson to use with my HS biology class. We looked at influenza and Ebola instead of HIV and HPV. I had my students find some of the media clips and I also provided some to them. The graphic organizer was excellent at helping students organized their thoughts.

The forty minute lesson presented in this article is designed to address the 21st-century skills of information and media literacy in the context of science issues. Designed for an eighth grade classroom it focuses on viruses and vaccines in particular HIV and HPV. The complete activity presented in this article uses media and also teaches about media. Students will be able to access scientific media, analyze what is presented, evaluate the value of the media and create written or visual representation of the science presented in the media. Understanding the validity of scientific media is essential for all citizens.
