An Authentic Science Conference

by: Joanne K. Olson and Anne M. Cox-Petersen

Students are interested in learning how science works, and an effective way to introduce elementary students to the nature of science is by explicitly incorporating it within the context of their regular science activities. Without this overt attention, students experiencing science inquiry will not attend to critical issues about how science and scientists work (McComas, Clough, and Almazroa 1998). One way to teach specific aspects of the scientific enterprise is to have students present their own research in an authentic science conference.
