According to the article I read, when teachers plan field trips, they should have one of two goals in mind: 1. Is this trip an open-ended trip? Or 2. Is this a focused trip? Scribner-Maclean, M. (2007). Determining which one will match the intended goal is only part of the planning a teacher must go through when selecting the right trip for his or her class. Open ended trips can help get students excited about science and give broad overviews of certain concepts and topics. However on the other hand, a focused field trip can hone in on certain key concepts and tasks, and solidify ideas, answer burning questions, and provide a real, hands-on experience for students. Unfortunately, with the budget cuts, taking a field trip can sometimes be out of the question. Many teachers love to plan educational field trips for their students. With science being an explore able hands on subject, there are many ways of doing field trips and getting the most out of the field trip. This article discussing some strategies to use, when planning the perfect field trip for science students. The key is having a clear goal in mind for the students to achieve. Field trips are a valuable tool for teaching. This article is informational on the strategies to use while taking students on field trips. Having students document what they saw, learned, and engaged in are great areas to consider. Create open-ended questions for the students to answer, this way you get to understand the students’ point of view on a topic. Have students complete task after the field trip also, such as a review of the day’s activities. This article was very helpful in strategies to use while planning and taking a science field trip with my students.
