This article describes three elements of a second grade classroom that came together to make a classroom a great learning environment. These three elements are: the classroom environment, the use of thematic teaching, and the hands-on teaching approach. There were animals in the rooms, the room was decorated in accordance with the theme, and the learning disciplines (science, math, and reading) were all related to the major theme throughout the year. Although this takes a great effort for a teacher, the students and parents considered it a memorable and positive experience for all.

For teachers fortunate enough to be able to house live animals in their elementary classrooms, this article models an interesting and unique way in which to do so. The classroom has a name, “The Darkwood Forest”. Several ideas were provided on how to transform a classroom into an enchanted forest for learning. The live animals were given special names and were used to spark interest and engage students in new learning. The article is worth reading if one is interested in creating a learning environment that can bring the outdoors inside to young urban campers.
