This article describes a classic discrepant event. Using a candle made out of potato instead of wax students see it burning and are asked to record all their observations. Students discuss and compile all observations from the class. After this is completed, the teacher eats part of the candle. This construction of this candle is explained in the article. This is a good example of how what you see might not be what you expected to see.
