The digital divide occurs when technology separates minority, rural, and poor populations from the same access to machines and information as the rest of society. It extends to schools with students that are most at risk for a number of reasons. Even though the article was written from the perspective of 2002, reading the article today one finds that perhaps the reasons for this are still reasons that continue the divide even today. While technology increases at lightning speeds we as educators need to look at the quality of the education we provide for our youth rather than the quantity. Maybe this will bridge the gap.

This commentary written in 2002 defines the digital divide as “…the technology gap that occurs when minority, rural, and poor populations do not have the same access to machines and information as the rest of society.” Technology is developing so rapidly that this definition still applies for the newest and best technology out there. With this said the author points out that it is not what you have but the quality of the curriculum. A good curriculum and a dedicated teacher can overcome the lack of technology.
