The article presents a few new reading strategies – at least for me. I especially liked the before reading strategy discussed in this article – scanning to find words in relation to the topic in a contest format. The other two strategies mentioned in the article would take time to teach. However, the time invested in teaching these skills – especially for the “popcorn” strategy, could pay off in higher reading skills in science for my students. These strategies are worth trying.

As a teacher, I am always hunting for new ways to teach my students how to get the most out of what they read. This article has some “new to me” approaches to consider. I was especially interested in the after-reading strategy called the 5-4-3-2-1 organizer. The author includes a graphic organizer for you to use with your students. If you are looking for additional before-, during-, and after reading strategies, this article shows how to enable our students to understand scientific principles by focusing on ways to help them improve their reading comprehension.
