Kids are always asking me why they need to learn something, and I am pretty sure that they usually feel like there is little value to their knowledge alone. This project lets kids know that they are part of something big; something that will help others, and allow them to see the big picture. The data they accumulate will become part of a large database that can be used by the participants, and essentially allows the students to try on the role of meteorologists. A loosely bound group of citizen scientists, the project is scalable and open to any classroom teacher.

RAT’s stands for Weather Research and Tracking Systems. It is a new way to teach K–12 science and technology by tracking and comparing weather data from a variety of locations within and outside the USA. The article explains what students do in various locations and how they understand not only technology of weather collection and reporting along with cultural awareness. The last paragraph of this article written in 2006 provides a website for classes to join but unfortunately, it is not an active site now.
