The authors of this article sum it up as follows: "…introducing young children to engineering and engineering design through this literature-enhanced STEM integration unit can be a meaningful and engaging way to facilitate connections between science, mathematics, and engineering." The authors worked with kindergarteners for five days. They introduced animals to students through picture books and then had them engineer a trail out of a paper design and blocks for a hamster to follow to get their basic life needs. Students had meaningful discussions as they took a paper hamster along their pretend trail.
