This article describes in detail on how second graders explored ways to measure the length, depth and width of a river near their school. They came up with all kinds of creative engineering design ideas for their “tools”. Then they actually tested their ideas in the river!! Many safety measures were taken by the teachers! Students kept measurement in a log book. This is a real world application of STEM skills for students to engage in.
