This article talks about student created models of landscapes using sand, soil, gravel, and vegetation. According from the authors, from the activity that the students perform, they will discover the forces that can change the landscape and learn how engineering design can affect those changes. The authors list the Next Generation Science Standards NGSS for this investigation. This lesson employs the 5E model of inquiry instruction (Engage, Explore, and Explain steps, Elaborate and Evaluate). Each step is separately described and offers helpful hints to make implementation easier. An Activity Sheet is provided, developed to follow each of the 5-E steps found in the investigation. There is also a final assessment at the end of the Activity Sheet. I would highly recommend this article to any teacher that wants their students to directly experience how the natural world and engineering design projects interact.
