Page Keeley discusses a simple formative assessment probe. If you put a sealed plastic bag of seeds in the ground, will the seeds grow? To us adults, the answer is simple, but not necessarily to young students. They may know that seeds need water to grow, but do they realize the direct relationship between the water and the seeds? Have them put a sealed bag of seeds in the soil to see what happens after it is watered. Nothing of course, but they can see that there needs to be a direct relationship between the seeds and water.
