This article is a good article for practicing educators to read. It gives good ideas for engaging students in higher order thinking, like engineers do. Even if you are not a teacher at a school like Douglas Jamerson Elementary, the one highlighted in the article, the lesson and how it is taught can be implemented in any classroom setting. The only thing I wish they included was some information on the school. It would be interesting to know how many students attend, how the school came about, etc.

This article starts out describing two instances where scientists engineered something to help an animal in distress. This led to a challenge for students to develop a trunk for an elephant who had lost their trunk. Since this situation could be life threatening to an elephant I feel that this might distress children. I did some research on elephants without trunks…they probably would not survive in the wild but could possibly survive in captivity with special help. But I find no research that it would be possible to give them a replacement trunk. So I do not feel this is an appropriate engineering challenge.
