I am excited to report that I am participating in a Project BudBurst Professional Development this spring. I am looking forward to participating in what looks to be a great program. I currently teach middle grades environmental science with an emphasis on climate change; this course and the ideas presented in this article are a great fit!

With spring approaching, Project Budburst is a fabulous way to get children outside and help them engage in science firsthand. This lesson plan encourages students to become more aware of the life cycles of native plants. Students are introduced to the science of phenology by honing their observation skills and analyzing when plants flower. They also study how long it takes plants to go to seed once they are pollinated. Students can be pleased to know that they are helping future generations when they record their collected data in Project Budburst's database. This is an excellent multi-year project which helps students understand the relationship between geography and blooming time.

Get your students outside and observing with Project Budburst; a free website where students are tasked with recording data related to flowering time of common plants. This project can be used to teach concepts related to geography, plant life cycles, and climate. This is an excellent activity honing student observation skills. Teachers can also utilize data from past years to have students look for trends related to bloom time. The article includes a detailed lesson plan for introducing and utilizing the web site in class.
