Excellect lesson connecting acid base chemistry to everyday experience. With a source of consistent teeth being somewhat problematic, I am wondering if chalk might be used as a model material. This substitution might also reduce the 40 day observation period. Overall very nice use of scientific method and data analysis on a project based learning format.

In an effort to combine learning about chemistry and tooth decay a fifth grade classroom studies about pH and tooth decay through inquiry. Students were guided with questions. They came up with ways to test different liquids. A sample data chart is provided as well as sample notebook entries. Students were asked to create a Glogster poster. The author also discusses assessing the complete activity. The topic explores a real-life situation for these children and is perfect for authentic inquiry.
