This is a great activity to educate upper elementary students about over use of renewable resources. Starting with the book “The Lorax” students then mine for their groups’ resource and log how many species they find in each given period of time. After graphing their results they determine if the trees are renewable or not. This then leads to a class discussion. The worksheets can be found on the NSTA website. This is a great way to combine math, science, and literature in one lesson written in the 5E Method.

This article outlines using the Dr. Seuss classic, The Lorax, to teach elementary students about renewable and nonrenewable resources. The article includes a detailed 5E lesson plan with samples of student work and ideas for extension. The lesson also includes an element of math since the students will draw line graphs to report their results. One part of this lesson that I will probably not use is telling my students that the book has been banned in some areas. Overall, I think this is a very useful lesson plan and I look forward to using it soon!
