This chapter is about fostering what we call academically productive talk in science classrooms to support students’ engagement with the eight science and engineering practices. We first introduce a picture of the most common varieties of classroom talk—recitation, or the IRE, and lecture. We contrast those with the kind of classroom conversation that can actually support the science and engineering practices. While the shift from “recitation to reasoning” will be complex and challenging, talk moves and strategies are powerful tools for teachers to try out and explore with colleagues. A list of materials, teacher background information, standards, assessment, references, and additional resources are provided. This book selection also includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors, Contributors, Acknowledgments, and Index.
