Questioning can be a powerful tool to support student's development of knowledge. The explanation and examples given in this article are excellent. I would suggest, however that the process is more difficult that it appears. Being able to ask good questions and being able to sustain and guide the conversation are skills that are developed over time. Teachers working to adopt this approach should be aware that the development of effective questioning is a demanding task.

I found the actual conversations with students transcribed in this chapter to be very insightful to determine what concepts students may be struggling with and how to get them to engage in a discourse about those concepts. I found the fact that the students found this environment a safe place to express doubts and lack of knowledge impressive, as most classrooms do not support an environment where students feel comfortable not knowing the answer. I liked how the author broke down the questioning strategies he used and tied it back to specific instances in the lesson with students. I could see this being used as part of a lesson study or professional learning community with a group of teachers unpacking the questioning strategies in this chapter.
