Archive: Science Update: Sea Level Rise – What it is; Why it's such a problem; What we can do about it, April 7, 2022

Every day NOAA scientists, technicians, and engineers work to monitor, understand, and predict environmental threats facing our nation. Among the most serious of these is sea level rise. Rising sea levels are pushing deadly and destructive storm surges farther inland, and creating disruptive and expensive nuisance flooding in many U.S. coastal communities, affecting infrastructure and public patience.

In this web seminar you’ll learn why sea level rise is occurring, how NOAA and partner agencies are collecting the most up to date data to understand this issue, about sea level rise's impacts now and into the future, and more on products and services being developed to help communities plan and prepare for the next season, next year, and for decades to come.

All individuals receive a certificate of participation and 100 NSTA activity points for attending the live seminar and completing the end-of-program survey. A certificate of participation is not awarded for watching the recorded version of the program.

We invite you to register for upcoming web seminars at NSTA.

Below are comments from individuals who attended the seminar:

  • "Extremely informative, speaker knowledgable and good use of analogies and repeating key ideas. Great use of visual representation. I liked that the website resources were being shared in the chat as they related to the speaker."
  • "I appreciated the data and forecasting. Helping students to understand the difference between probabilities and certainties while also understanding the need to act on probabilities is important at the high school level. Few become scientists, but all become adults that make decisions."

A certificate of attendance was deposited into participants' account page for completing the evaluation form at the end of the program.
