English Language Learners

Hello, my nephews are ELL kinder students (ages 5 and 6) and currently being taught from home. My sister does not speak English fluently, therefore, distance learning has made it difficult for her to assist her children with homework and daily coursework as they are all trying to learn the language. However, their teacher has been very supportive and even provided a tutor in case she is unavailable and unable to assist the students during the week.

As a future educator, I would like to find ways to help my students and empower ELL parents and familes at home:

  • What if my students´ parents also do not know how to read or write?
  • How could I help build my student´s English vocabulary if Spanish is their first language?
  • What if my students´ parents read only in Spanish and cannot assist them with homework?
